Our experienced Houston auto accident attorneys are saddened to report another pedestrian fatality in the city. Officials have confirmed one person was left dead in an accident on southbound Texas 6.
The Houston Chronicle reported the accident on April 11, 2012, as a “pedestrian and vehicle accident.”
Sadly pedestrian deaths are all too common in America. Statistics show a pedestrian is killed in a preventable accident every two hours. That adds up to more than 4,000 lives lost every year.
Some stark statistics about pedestrian deaths in Houston were revealed in a recent report, Dangerous by Design 2011, published by Transportation for America.
The report said from 2000 to 2009, 47,700 pedestrians were killed, “equivalent to a jumbo jet full of passengers crashing roughly every month.”
It’s a sobering statistic put in those graphic terms and it makes alarming reading for Houston.
The Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown conurbation ranked as the ninth most dangerous for pedestrians in the nation. From 2000 to 2009, 1,024 pedestrians died here.
Walking should be good for your health. But poor design of safety features for pedestrians, and a lack of sidewalks and medians, means it’s a potential death sentence in Houston, the Houston Chronicle recently reported.
Last month our experienced pedestrian accident injury lawyers reported on how inFebruary, 2012, a 73-year-old woman was hit and killed by a tow truck on Bellaire. She never had a chance. This victim was dragged along a driveway before the driver stopped, Houston police said.
In this case, the pedestrian walking on a sidewalk, and not even attempting to cross a road, when the tow truck struck her and dragged her along the driveway.
Our thoughts are with the victims and their families when pedestrian accidents occur.
These cases can and do result in lawsuits. Recently the local media reported on how a driver from Katy in Texas is being sued for injuring a pedestrian in a case filed in Harris County.
In this case the plaintiff claims a driver veered off the road and hit her. When a pedestrian is killed on the roads the family of the deceased can bring a wrongful death lawsuit.
Even when pedestrians were not on crosswalks there may be grounds for a lawsuit. Almost half of all accidents involving pedestrians entail alcohol consumption on the behalf of the driver. These are often the most fatal kinds of accidents because the reactions of drivers are impaired and they fail to slow down.
